About Signal Boosters

The FCC passed regulations on cell phone signal boosters that went into effect in 2014 mandating that all signal booster amplifiers must be sold as part of an entire kit, including antennas and cables, and can not be sold individually. Since then, all signal booster amplifiers have been required to be sold as a complete kit, even for situations where just an amplifier needs to be replaced in an existing system.

A cell phone signal booster is designed to be as safe as possible for anyone who may come into contact with it. All signal boosters are heavily regulated by the FCC, both to prevent impact to the carrier networks and to ensure that there is no potential for harm to any living thing by an improperly designed, manufactured, or installed system. 

The maximum amount of power that a cell phone signal booster can produce is less than or equal to what you would find from any WiFi access point, or what you would experience if you were close to a cell tower in an urban area, so there should not be any noticeable difference to anyone who is already able to be in strong cellular signal areas without impact.

As such, every precaution has been taken to ensure that cell phone signal boosters are safe for everyone, including people who are electromagnetically sensitive

How a Cell Phone Signal Booster Works

A cell phone signal booster system is composed of an amplifier, an outside antenna, one or many inside antennas, and cable that connects all of the components together. The signal booster system works in the following way:

  1. The outside antenna receives the existing outside cell signal.
  2. The existing outside cell signal is passed over a cable from the outside antenna to the signal amplifier.
  3. The signal amplifier boosts the cell signal significantly.
  4. The boosted cell signal is passed over another cable to one or many inside antennas. 
  5. The inside antenna(s) broadcasts the boosted signal to the inside area that needs better cell signal.

The system also works in reverse. When a mobile device is being used inside, the signal goes through the system in reverse, is boosted, and then the strong signal is broadcasted towards the external cell towers.

What a Cell Phone Signal Booster Does NOT Do

A cell phone signal booster requires an existing outside cell signal to boost. It cannot create it's own cellular signal, so if there is not an existing outside cell signal available, then a cell phone signal booster will not work.

Every signal booster is designed to increase the strength of the existing outside signal. The amount of decibels that the signal is increased by varies based on the initial strength of the existing outside signal, boosting power of the amplifier, and signal loss that's experienced from the cable and components while the signal is in transit. So while the amount of boosting is different for every situation, the amplifier is designed to provide as much boosting as possible, given the circumstances.

Coverage Area is More Important

Rather than evaluating a booster based on the amount of dB gain or bars that it's going to increase the signal on your phone by, it's usually better to think in terms of the size of the coverage area that the booster will be providing based on the outside signal strength. Within the coverage area, the signal should be strong enough so that you can maintain a quality phone call and have much faster data speeds.

Outside Signal Strength Matters

As a rule of thumb, the weaker the existing outside signal, the smaller the coverage area that the signal booster is going to be provide inside of the building or vehicle. If the outside signal gets stronger, the booster will be able to provide more coverage, until it gets to the point where the signal outside hits a maximum threshold and the coverage will be at its largest. 

How Amplifier Strength Affects Coverage Area Size

While the previous example illustrates how the strength of the outside signal directly impacts the size of the coverage area, in most real world scenarios, the signal strength is mostly likely going to stay constant, unless you're in a vehicle and are moving between towers. 

In this case, the way that you would grow or shrink the size of the inside coverage area is going to be by using a stronger or weaker signal amplifier. An entry level amplifier will provide you with the smallest coverage area, which may end up being just a few feet from the inside antenna, while the strongest available amplifier will provide you with the largest possible coverage area. 

As long as you're able to make and receive calls, and have fast data speeds within the space that needs better signal, then the signal booster performance will be considered a success, irrespective of how many bars or decibels the signal has been improved by.

A cell phone signal booster does not require an Internet connection to function. It only requires some existing outside cell signal to work, which it amplifies and then broadcasts to the inside area of the home, office, or vehicle that needs better signal.

A network extender, which is a device sold by the cell carriers, does require a high-speed Internet connection to work. It creates a small cell signal in your home and then routes all cell phone calls and data over your high-speed Internet connection to the outside world. 

While a signal booster will significantly improve your cellular signal, it will not improve the WiFi for your home broadband Internet. Signal boosters are designed to only work on certain wireless frequencies that are used for cellular networks. WiFi uses different frequencies, so it is not affected by a signal booster.

If you're using a wireless hotspot (MiFi, Jetpack, etc.), then a signal booster will improve the data speeds that you'll be receiving from the device, but it will not be able to increase the size of the area where you're able to connect to the hotspot via WiFi.

All modern signal boosters use a five-band amplifier, but you may come across some legacy dual-band amplifiers while searching for a booster solution. We'll cover both. 

Five Band Signal Boosters

Five band signal boosters will boost voice calls, 3G, 4G HSPA+, 4G LTE and 5G (as long as it's deployed on one of the five frequency bands) so you'll have better voice calls and faster data for any network that you're on. You should almost always use a five-band amplifier for boosting signal.

Dual Band Signal Boosters

Dual-band signal boosters only boost two of the five available frequency bands, so if your carrier is using one of the bands that is not boosted by your amplifier, then you will not receive any benefit. We highly recommend using a five-band booster over a dual-band system.

The current signal boosters on the market for consumer use support the five major cellular bands currently in use in North America. All new future technologies (5G) deployed by the carriers that use one of the five major cellular bands: 700, 850, 1700, 1900, and 2100 MHz will be supported by the current five-band signal boosters. Technologies that are deployed on bands other than that will not be supported by any of the currently available consumer signal boosters.

That said, carriers have told us that their 4G LTE networks, which are boosted by all of our consumer signal boosters, are not going away anytime soon. Verizon, for example, has committed to 4G LTE through 2030. 

This means that a booster you get today will likely work well through at least 2030. By that time, additional frequency bands should have been approved by the FCC and we'll have more advanced consumer boosters, so an upgrade will make sense. 

There are no monthly fees for using a cell phone signal booster. The only cost to you is what you spend when you originally purchase the signal booster.

Five-band and dual-band signal boosters are different based on the frequencies and networks that they boost. We'll cover each in depth here:

Five Band Signal Boosters

With the advent of high-speed data over 4G LTE, it was necessary to use additional frequency bands (ranges), as there was not enough room in the existing two frequency bands to handle the additional traffic. Three additional bands were added, for a total of five bands (700, 850, 1900, and 1700/2100 MHz) being used by the major carriers for their different 2G, 3G, 4G, 4G LTE and now 5G networks. 

In order to ensure that every network for every carrier was being boosted by the same signal amplifier, five band boosters were created to amplify all bands simultaneously. 

A five-band signal booster is the only recommended type of booster to ensure you can boost all current networks on all carriers, and any future network that uses any of the five main frequency bands.

Dual Band Signal Boosters

Prior to the release of 4G LTE, cell carriers provided voice calls and slower 3G data over only two frequency bands, 850 and 1900 MHz. All dual-band signal boosters will amplify these two frequencies, so any network deployed on a band outside of those two will not be boosted. Dual-band boosters are no longer manufactured and should only be used for legacy applications.

These abbreviations represent the different types of networks that the cellular carriers offer. Your phone can only connect to one network at a time, so whichever of these symbols that you see on the screen of your phone, that's the network you're currently using.

Here is an explanation of each network type:

  • 1X has traditionally indicated a voice-only connection.
  • E (Edge) or 3G are two earlier generations of cellular data.  Someone connected to one of these technologies can expect internet connectivity but may experience issues streaming audio or video.
  • 4G (HSPA+) is an enhanced version of 3G that released to select carriers to increase data-speed (backhaul) using the same frequency space that 3G has occupied.
  • 4G LTE is the most widespread network currently.  Having a 4G LTE connection on your phone most likely indicates the capability to connect to the internet and stream HD audio or video.
  • 5G is the newest cellular generation and is known for providing extremely fast data speeds and very low latency, which will enable new technologies, like remote surgeries, that have never before been possible.

Antennas & Accessories

All antennas used in cell phone booster systems are capable of both receiving and transmitting cellular signal simultaneously. There are two main types of outside antennas: yagi and omni. We're going to cover both in this article. 

Yagi Antenna

The outdoor yagi directional antenna, usually distinguished by its triangular shape, focuses as much energy as possible to receive and transmit in a single direction. The yagi antenna can receive two to three times the amount of signal compared to the omni antenna. For weak signal environments, a Yagi antenna is the best choice to maximize the amount of indoor coverage area you receive and sometimes it is the only option for extremely weak outdoor signal. 

Yagi antennas are typically mounted to a vertical pole on the roof of the building where you're installing the signal booster solution and then aimed in the direction of the cell towers for the carrier you're looking to boost.

Omni Antenna

An omni-directional (omni) antenna will receive signal from all directions, so it is preferable for environments with adequate rooftop signal for all major carriers if you want to boost multiple carriers inside, or for situations where the outside signal may be reflecting off of obstacles, like mountainous or urban terrain.  

Omni antennas can be mounted directly to the edge of a building with the included L bracket, or they can be mounted on a vertical pole to provide additional elevation and clear potential obstacles. No aiming is required for an omni antenna.

The indoor antenna is responsible for allowing your phone to communicate with the rest of the system and should ideally be placed central to the coverage area you intend to enhance. There are two main types of inside antennas offered with cell phone signal booster systems: panel and dome. We'll cover both in this article.

Panel Antenna

Panel antennas are directional, which means that they focus most of the signal they broadcast in one direction, so the signal strength and coverage area in the direction that they are pointed is going to be greater than a dome antenna, which broadcasts in all directions. Panel antennas are better at penetrating internal walls and floors because of their directionality. 

A panel antenna can be installed in a building in the following ways:

  • For maximum coverage, it is best placed in the attic or crawlspace above the floors that need coverage
  • Optionally on the ceiling facing downwards if the space above is not accessible
  • Finally, on the wall at the end of a hallways or room broadcasting across the space will work, but typically provides the smallest coverage area

For some signal boosters systems, a panel antenna is included as the outside antenna, so it takes the place of a yagi directional antenna. The panel antenna should be mounted to a vertical pole on the roof of the building in this situation.

Dome Antenna

Dome antennas are omni-directional, which means that they will broadcast signal in all directions on the same floor with equal strength, and are designed to be mounted to a drop ceiling in the center of the space that needs better signal. Since dome antennas are difficult to mount to a hard ceiling, they are more often used in professional installations in buildings or locations with an exposed ceiling. 

A lightning surge protector can help protect your cell signal-boosting amplifier from surges entering the system via the outside antenna.  Lightning is incredibly powerful so a surge protector may not be able to stop a direct lightning strike, however, it can protect against surges in the air from lightning striking nearby or from other electrical events.

Each lightning protector contains a gas discharge element that acts as a fuse.  In the event of a surge, the gas discharge element will sever the connection between the outside antenna and the amplifier.  The surge will instead travel over a ground wire to the ground where it can safely dissipate. Note: The lightning protector gets installed between the outside antenna and the amplifier.  Most lightning protectors have two female ports, so they require an extra 2 ft cable for installation.  If you have a lightning protector with one Male and one Female connector, then you do not need a 2 ft cable.  There are two options for installation:
  • Method 1: Outside Antenna > 2 ft Cable > Lightning Protector > Longer Cable > Amplifier
  • Method 2: Outside Antenna > Longer Cable > Lightning Protector > 2 ft Cable > Amplifier
Method 1 is the recommended method to keep the surge further from the amplifier, however, the option you choose will depend on how you can best ground the lightning protector.   The rules for grounding the lightning protector vary by state and municipality, so we recommend contacting your local electrical code enforcement officer to ask about cable size and where you can ground to. In general, we recommend a 10 AWG copper ground wire, and that it be as short as possible with minimal bends.  One end of the wire should be attached to the ground screw on the lightning protector.  The other end of the wire should be attached to a ground point.  This could include:
  • A metal water pipe, near where it enters the building
  • The building’s existing exterior grounding rod
  • Metal frame of the building that’s connected to the existing building grounding electrode system.
When in doubt and to make sure you’re complying with the local electrical code, contact your local electrical code enforcement officer. Lastly, if you install the lightning protector outside, you’ll want to waterproof any connections to ensure that water doesn’t cause any corrosion which could cause performance issues in the future.  Basic electrical tape can be used at a minimum, but look for special waterproofing tape at a home improvement center. Replacement gas discharge elements are available.  If your system works without the lightning protector installed but does not work with it installed, then it’s likely that you need to replace the gas discharge element.

If you are looking to make a product change, and as long as your order has not shipped yet, we will need to speak with you directly in order to make any order or product change. Call us as soon as you recognize you need to make a change so we can stop your order from processing, and one of our representatives will be glad to assist you.

If you are wanting to make a delivery method change, contact us as soon as possible. As long as your order has not shipped yet, and depending on what time of day you call, we can sometimes make delivery option changes (i.e., from Regular Ground to Overnight Delivery, etc.). If you upgrade from one delivery option to a higher (or lower) delivery method, we will provide you with information on the cost difference and assist you with making that change. 

Once your order is placed, you will receive an order confirmation by email. Once your order ships, you will receive a separate notification of shipping to the email address provided on the original order. This notification will include the name of the carrier used, and tracking number(s). Often times your order will include more than one box and we will include each tracking number individually.

If you click on the tracking number in this email, it will take you to the carrier’s website where you will be able to see the status and the expected delivery date of your order.

Product Specific Questions

After you place your order, we'll ship you a box containing the amplifier, outside antenna, and inside antenna. Cable, grounding materials, and any installation-related components will be provided by the installer.

Once you receive your order, you'll open the top of the box and find a card with a unique identification code, phone number, and URL to schedule your professional installation either on the phone or online. 

Please note: You must receive your signal booster before you can schedule the installation.

Once you schedule your installation, then that's all you need to do. The installation will be performed by a trained installer from OnTech, formerly Dish Network. Installation is available in every zip code within the United States and installers can be on-site in as little as 24 hours, depending on availability.

Returns & Exchanges

We do not typically assess a restocking fee, except for exceptional circumstances. To avoid additional fees, please follow these instructions:

  • The return period starts on the day the product is received and ends after 60 days. A return must be initiated before the return period expires.
  • Items must be returned to the address provided in the RMA return instructions.
  • All original parts and accessories must be returned, including manuals and packaging. 
  • Returns must be placed in an outer shipping box to avoid damage to the product packaging.
  • Original product packaging should be kept in as good of condition as possible.
  • All products being returned should be in good condition with no cables cut or components damaged.

Items that may be assessed a restocking fee include: 

  • Products that were not authorized to be returned
  • Products that were mailed after the return period expired
  • Products that were damaged or missing original parts or materials.
  • Signal meters or items that list a restocking fee in the product description.

While we don't technically offer the ability to exchange a product for another, we instead can take a return and then place a new order for the product that you would like to switch to. This way you'll receive the new product faster and the accounting is much cleaner for everyone.

In most cases, orders that are received by 1pm Eastern Time (10am Pacific Time) can be shipped the same day.  Expedited orders that are received by this deadline will ship the same day.  Regular ground orders will often ship same day, but unless Expedited shipping is purchased, we cannot guarantee same-day shipping.  Custom orders, special order items, and items that are out of stock can sometimes take an extra one to three days to ship.

In order to provide you with the best pricing and telephone customer support, we do not have a storefront where you can come and pick up your order. We can however, ship most products the same day and we offer Next Day Air shipping to deliver your order the following day, as long as your order is placed by our shipping cut-off deadline.

Our products can be shipped to anywhere in the United States.  Most of our products can also be shipped to locations outside of the United States, including Puerto Rico, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and other U.S. Territories, Canada, Mexico, Australia, and New Zealand, as well as some locations in Central and South America.

We unfortunately cannot ship to locations in Europe, Africa, or Asia.

We can deliver our products to your home or office using either a Physical Mailing Address or Post Office Box.  Please note that UPS will not deliver to PO boxes, but the United States Postal Service (USPS) can.  In order to ensure prompt and accurate delivery of your package, it is always advisable to provide a physical mailing address for delivery, if at all possible.

Signal Booster Installation

Your signal booster kit should include a printed manual in the box that you receive with all of the components, though not every signal booster that we sell has an installation manual.

If you would like an electronic (PDF) version of the manual, then you can find that by going to the product page for your signal booster on our website, and then clicking the links in the product description.

If you're unable to find the install guide (user manual), then please reach out to us at support@ubersignal.com and we'll be happy to email you a PDF of the manual. 

Please note, not every product has a user manual or installation guide. Most of the signal booster kits will have a manual, but accessories and tools will not.

The ability to install a signal booster for your home by yourself depends on a few different things, including the size, shape and makeup of the building you're installing it in, how handy you are with tools and running cable, and the ability for you to climb up on the roof of the house to install the outside antenna. 

Spaces 3,000 sq ft or less

If the house or space is 3,000 sq ft or less, you're fairly handy and are used to working on projects at home, and you can climb up on the roof, then you should be able to install the signal booster yourself.

Spaces larger than 3,000 sq ft

If the space is larger than 3,000 sq ft or irregularly shaped, manufactured of materials other than standard wood or drywall, or the roof is inaccessible, then it would be best to have a professional install your signal booster for you. Most electricians, cable repair people, or general contractors will be able to perform the installation.  As long as someone is able to install the antenna on the roof and run the cable, then one of our professionals can walk you through everything else, including where to locate the components, how to aim the antenna, etc.

Signal boosters designed for use in a vehicle are generally much easier to install than a home or office signal booster. We'll cover the main types of vehicle signal boosters and the difficulty with installing them in this article.

Car & Truck Signal Boosters

The magnet mount antenna sticks to the top of the vehicle and the attached cable is run under the moulding of the door frame. The amplifier is placed under a seat, and the inside antenna or cradle is mounted on the dashboard. Finally, the power supply is plugged in to an available cigarette lighter, and the booster starts working.

RV Signal Boosters

This type of installation can be undertaken yourself, but may require professional assistance, depending on how hard it is to the run the cable into the RV.

Fleet Signal Boosters

A hole will need to be punched through the roof of the vehicle, and a permanent, NMO antenna will be attached with a bolt to the roof. The power supply will be hardwired to the batter, as opposed to a cigarette lighter power adapter that comes with the standard vehicle kits, and the amplifier permanently mounted out of the way.  

Boat & Marine Signal Boosters

This type of installation can be undertaken yourself, but may require professional assistance, depending on how hard it is to the run the cable through the boat.

 

All of the signal boosters that we sell do not require any sort of activation to begin boosting signal, with the exception of the Cel-Fi GO X, which requires carrier registration through its app as part of its setup process before it will begin boosting signal. 

While you do not need to activate your signal booster to use it, if you're operating a signal booster in the United States, you are required to register it with your cell carrier. This registration does not impact how the signal booster functions, rather it tells the carrier that a booster is operating at your location, in the event that they see any interference on their network and need to track down whether it was caused by a signal booster.

Rest assured, of the millions of consumer-level signal booster systems that have been sold in the United States since 2014, there have been no recorded issues of a signal booster causing interference with a carrier's network. That said, you should still register your signal booster to comply with FCC regulations.
